I happened to be at the junction of RCAF Road and the Canadian Pacific twin tracks just at the right moment.

Looking towards Sidney Street and the spur lines.

The snow was deep…

A rather pretty gate guardian, no?

Along with so many others, I stood and waited in sub zero temperatures at the repatriation ceremony for Sapper Sean Greenfield, the 108th Canadian soldier to die during the Afghanistan mission.

The 25-year-old was killed when his armoured vehicle struck a roadside bomb in the volatile Zhari district, west of Kandahar city. He is the second Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan this year.

Looking down RCAF Road towards Highway 2 and CFB Trenton.

The federal government’s deplorable decision that flags and ensigns would not be used to honour the dead has largely become a toothless tiger.

Common sense and decency still prevail in some areas..

There is a story behind every image…

This is not a happy story

Waiting for the motorcade at the RCAF road runway crash gate

These train cars have been sitting idle on a Canadian Pacific siding for the better part of two months – a sign of the times, as are the markings on the cars.

The Honda automobile assembly plant is about 100 kilometers north of Toronto and I live about 150 kilometers east of Toronto and the car assembly plants for the big three.

While it’s not that surprising that I see a lot of these car transporters, I see more and more of them idle.

There is also a very obvious change in the nature of the goods that are being shipped – far less container traffic. You could attribute the decline to the closure of the St Lawrence Seaway – until you realize that the container ports is in Montreal and navigable year round.
